In our last blog we discussed the definition of a HERS score—the measurement of a home’s energy efficiency—and how, like golf, the lower the score the better value it is.

Now, let’s show you the HERS rating in action—at one of our recent builds in Frontenac, Mo.

Below, you see the 8,000+ square-foot home of finished space that features five bedrooms plus a loft area, finished lower level, a four-car garage, pool and outdoor covered living room with outdoor fireplace, a high efficiency gas furnace HVAC system, plus a lower level.

Unseen to the casual eye are energy features that brought this new residence a HERS score of 41, meaning that it was approximately 59 percent more energy efficient than a home built to the 2009 International Energy Code. That’s an amazing gain. But what does that score mean in plainer language?

For starters, the home’s annual heating bill was decreased by an estimated $1,178; cooling coasts were reduced by $886; water heating by $73; and lights and appliances, $485, for an energy savings total estimated at $2,621! In addition, pollution was also prevented, with carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides all dramatically reduced.

So what does R.E.A Homes do to bring about these helpful changes? First, we install a complete thermal enclosure system with comprehensive air sealing, quality installed insulation, and high-performing windows. Next, we put in a comprehensive water management system to protect the roof, walls, and foundation. This includes flashing, a drainage plane, and site grading to move water from the roof to the ground, then away from the house. Water-resistant materials and underneath slabs also help lessen the potential for water entering the home.

Add to that a high efficiency heating, cooling, and ventilation system designed and installed for optimal performance, plus energy-efficient high-performance lighting and appliances that help decrease utility bills, and this magnificent home in Frontenac comes in with a HERS score of 41.

Next time, we’ll look at the HERS rating of another one of our new homes, in Ladue.
